Can I give my dog aspirin for pain?

Question:

My 9 year dog occasionally has pain in her hips when she gets cold.  What can I do to help with the pain relief?  Can I apply a heating pad or maybe give her some baby aspirin?  Is there anything at the pet store that I can get to help with the pain?

Answer:

Arthritis is common in dogs (and cats) as they get older. There are a number of excellent medications to aid in pain management. Dogs and cats are rather aspirin sensitive species. Your veterinarian should be consulted on the best pain management program in light of other possible medical issues that might be present.
