Help! My dog is urinating on the bed and tearing up the house!

Question:

A few weeks ago, my 7-year-old dog started urinating on my bed, even right after spending time outside. Then I shut the bedroom doors while I was away at work all day and he scratched up the doors and trim. What's going on?

Answer:

Most of this sounds like separation anxiety. However, it is unusual for separation anxiety to develop suddenly in an adult. Did anything change in your household leading up to this, such as an addition or subtraction of a family member (person or pet)? Is there any unusual activity (construction, for example) in or around your home? Please check with your veterinarian about these questions so you can start a conversation about your dog's separation anxiety. Your veterinarian may recommend you and your dog see a board-certified veterinary behaviorist in your area. If so, the behaviorist will almost certainly be able to shed more light on this problem.
