I have a tiny kitten with fleas. What do I do?

Question:

I have a very small kitten, about 5 to 6 weeks old, and she has fleas. What’s the best treatment to clean her up and prevent infestation?

Answer:

Kittens are incredibly adorable – congratulations! At this age she needs to be seen by a veterinarian for a physical exam, deworming, feline leukemia & FIV testing and to get started on vaccinations. The veterinarian can also recommend appropriate flea products for her. Please make sure to get the flea medications form your veterinarian and not the pet supply store. Many of the products that kill fleas are dangerous for kittens. Your veterinarian will know which ones are safe.
