Lameness that comes and goes.

Question:

My dog had both her knees (stifles) operated on a year ago for a high grade (3/4 left knee & 3.5/4 right) luxating patellas. She has been walking fine but over last few months I have noticed in her gait on her right leg that she tends to waddle. She doesn’t complain or not use her limb. It just comes and goes when we go on long walks. The left leg seems fine. I see from the article on ExpertVet that in some cases a luxating patella essentially re-luxates in the higher grades. Any recommendations?

Answer:

There are many reasons why your dog may be having an issue with her stifle (knee).  It could be related or unrelated to her prior surgery.  The best action would be to have her reexamined by a board-certified veterinary surgeon.
