My dog is itching but does not have fleas. What should I give her?

Question:

I am sure my dog does not have fleas but he is constantly itching at his hindquarters. I assume it's dry skin, what can I give my bloodhound puppy?

Answer:

It is possible that the constant heat in the home could be drying out your dog’s skin and contributing to the problem. There could also be active secondary infections with bacteria and/or yeast on the skin if your dog is food allergic or environmentally allergic. Some simple diagnostics such as a skin scrape and skin surface cytology and a complete dermatology exam would be a good place to start to evaluate this problem.
