My older dog is suddenly having accidents in the house. What could cause this?

Question:

My 9 year old lab mix is suddenly urinating and defecating in the house. My son's young Jack Russell mix is here every other weekend and sometimes has accidents in the house, would that cause my dog to do it? She is on steroids for skin problems as well. But has never gone in the house, and my sons dog has been around off and on for 2 years.

Answer:

Changes in your pet’s behavior could be an indication of an underlying medical condition, especially in a senior dog.  Your first step to sorting this problem out is to schedule an appointment with your family veterinarian to rule out medical causes.  If your veterinarian does not find a medical cause for your pet’s change in behavior, there are pet behaviorists that can help.  Your family veterinarian should be able to refer you to a reputable behaviorist in your area.
