My poor lab has sores all over and cannot keep down food. I don't know what to do for him.

Question:

Our 8 year old Labrador has a nasty, oozing sore in his throat area and many, other sore spots all over his body. Our vet has been treating him for over a month with strong antibiotics, but cannot get them healed. Now he is refusing to eat, and if he eats something, he throws up. Do you have any idea what could be the problem?

Answer:

It is difficult to tell if the sores on his body and in his throat are related. If they are not healing with the antibiotics, it could be because they are caused by a bacteria that the antibiotic does not cover, they are secondary to a viral infection, parasitic infection, immune-mediated disease or possibly neoplastic in origin. If your veterinarian has tried the most common and reasonable approach and that is not working, I would recommend asking your veterinarian for a referral to an internal medicine specialist. The specialist may discuss culturing the sores to identify if there is a bacteria and what it is sensitive to or taking biopsies to look for another underlying cause. Due to the fact that he is now vomiting, he needs so see a doctor as soon as possible. Good luck with him.
