Tiny the Cat Slims Down

An obese grey cat was dropped off at the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) in Fredericton, N.B., Canada, and he was the heaviest cat they had ever seen. Weighting in at over 30 pounds, this was nearly double the weight that he should have been. Pet obesity is a common problem and has become more and more prevalent in recent years. Just as with humans, extra weight can lead to a number of conditions including Hypertension, Joint problems, and Type II Diabetes.

The staff at SPCA affectionately named the fat cat “Tiny,” and became determined to get him back on the road to health. They placed him on a high protein, low carbohydrate diet, similar to the Atkins diet and he was exercised 15 minutes a day. Tiny’s story went viral, and the entire nation fell in love with him. It wasn’t long before the world latched on to the story after reading about it on both CNN’s and People Magazine’s websites. Because of his popularity, Tiny was able to raise over $10,000.00 for the Fredericton SPCA, mainly through donations and sales of “Tiny’s Ties,” a line of bowties and neckties made strictly for felines. Proceeds are used to take care of other animals in need.

In one year’s time, Tiny lost 43% of his overall body weight, regained optimum health, raised money for other cats, and fittingly, was adopted by foster mom Nancy Garon. Tiny not only raised money, but also the spirits of those in the SPCA community.
