Am I hurting my cat by giving her ice cream?

Does ice cream cause problems with a cat?

It is always a good idea to check with a veterinarian prior to feeding a pet food that is not specifically designed for their digestive track. Normal ingredients in ice-cream are typically not toxic to cats. Ice-cream is primarily made from milk. Some cats that are lactose intolerant could suffer from excess gas or diarrhea. Some sugar-free ice-creams may contain xylitol. Xylitol can be toxic to cats (hypoglycemia, liver failure) and should be avoided. As with most things in life, moderation is important. Small amount of ice-cream will normally be tolerated by a healthy cat. Excess amounts can cause digestive upset including vomiting, gas and diarrhea. Similar in people, the excess fat is a concern as well. If your cat shows signs of digestive upset after small amounts of ice-cream please take her or him to your local veterinarian as soon as possible.
