Can a kitten infected with Feline Herpes Virus (FHV) be vet certified for sale from a breeder? I bought a kitten that is very sick with the virus, and I was told it was a little eye scratch. In turns out that the kitten had a very horrible case of FHV that never fully goes away. I am positive that the breeder knew. What is the best thing we can do for the kitten?
I am sorry to hear that your kitten has FHV. You may have already seen this article, but, just in case, here is a thorough overview of FHV and your treatment options: https://expertvet.com/articles/feline-herpes-virus. Our doctors would not be able to comment on certifying a kitten for sale.
As you can see, FHV is very common in catteries, breeding facilities, and anyplace where there are numerous cats, such as shelters and rescues. Have you spoken with the breeder about returning the kitten (that is if you are not already madly in love)? If you are keeping the kitten, it would be good to see a board-certified ophthalmologist. As you can see from the article, many cats do just fine with management of FHV, while some need more extensive care. An ophthalmologist can help you decide the best course of action to take with your kitten.
